How To Step Up Your Game When Training New Staff
Posted on December 8th, 2016
This is a real simple one on team training. When it comes to training staff most people, for some reason, suffer brain freeze or something. It's like all of a sudden they're not teachers anymore, but that's all your job is when you're training your staff, you're just teaching them right? You're going to introduce a concept and then you're going to practice against that concept. You don't want to just practice on your customers, your students, your members or whatever it is you call them. You need to practice these methods whether that's your teaching method, whether that's your marketing, whether that’s asking for referrals, signing people up, selling retail, it doesn't matter what it is, all of these procedures should be practiced on a consist basis.

The first drill that you should consider is “I go, you go”. For instance, we're going to learn how to answer the phone. You say "ring-ring" and I say, "Thank you for calling ABC Fitness, how may I help you?" Now I say "ring-ring" and you go, "Thank you calling ABC Fitness, what's up?" Buzzer you didn't say it right. Go again, I go, you go. You ring, "ring-ring" I answer, "It's a great day at ABC Fitness how may I help you?". My turn, I go, you go, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. Is it boring? Well it doesn't have to be. That's why I like the buzzer, if it's not perfect I'm going to buzz you. If I'm not perfect you buzz me.

You do it over and over and over, consistently, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, until it's so built in that you know longer think about it. It is said exactly the same way, you do exactly the same thing each and every time you do it. Whether that is introducing them to a T-shirt or whether that's introducing them to a new pair of shoes, it doesn't matter what it is, it's a specific way of doing everything. You’ve just got to figure it out. "Well I don't know what that is", it doesn't matter what it is, just pick something and do it. You're going to find out whether it works or not. If it doesn't work, and when I say it doesn't work that doesn't mean you tried it once and nobody bought anything right? If you did it once that doesn't mean anything. Do it 10, you do it 20, you do it 30 times then you look at the results. How'd it work? Well it worked half the time. Okay, is that good or bad? I don't know, tweak one thing and go again. I go, you go, back and forth, drill, I go, you go.

How often should you do I go, you go? Well, maybe once a week. On Tuesday you do a different drill, and we'll talk on another session about all kinds of different drills. You want to keep it engaging and entertaining for your staff. The more fun you can make it the more impactful it will be. Alright, I go, you go, first drill.
